From the Snow-clad Himalayas

Ulley | Leh - Ladhak

The Odds: Extreme climate (-12C to -15C at an average); Less of oxygen / thin air / 14000 ft; Less of fitness and endurance for me; Only 20% of the people have been lucky to see it in the first visit; Battling with AMS constantly

The Evens: A lifetime opportunity to see the Phantom Grey Ghost in its habitat; Accompanying a person with infectious energy towards wildlife - Mohit Ghatak

This is what I started the journey with, if I can manage to see a glimpse of the “Chan” – the snow leopard in its habitat, that will be enough for me. Before going I had no clue of the adversities, the challenges, the heart pounding excitement of seeing this animal. People have been making several trips to the mountain just for a glimpse of the camouflage magician , but i am simply lucky to see it on the first day when I land – and that too see it kill an Ibex twice it’s size , bouncing the terrain like ping-pong ball and then having the kill for next 2 days. It’s a dream come true and a life changing experience. When I could first see the snow leopard clearly in the spotting scope , the tears rolled down my cheeks – tears for joy or tears of see the magnificent marvel as a wildlife lover – I don’t know , but one thing for sure , the magnetism of this rare breed is strong enough to beat the Odds and bet on the Evens !

These are very preliminary shots from my nearly frozen hands clicking the camera. I am tagging the ultimate photographer in my post. Please do also see his shots, you will feel the chill on your spine and at the same time will have an adorable feeling towards this cute species of leopard.

Special thanks to Konchok Dogmo and Tsewang Morup & their crew to make this happen, I have heard about simplicity and endurance of the mountain man, this time I experienced it also, this is as rare as the snow leopard in this world I would say.

I was typing this as I was seeing the snow-capped Himalaya vanishing it the distant horizon, the only thing I can say is “Julley “ – I will come back again ……. very soon!
